Released on July 20th, in 2001 in Japan, “Spirited Away” stayed in theaters for almost 10 months, breaking all the previous box-office records in Japan, including that of “Titanic” and “Princess Mononoke” by the same director Hayao Miyazaki. With this astonishing film about a girl’s spiritual journey, Mr. Miyazaki again showed that he is one of the best directors living in the world. This animation film was also awarded prestageous Golden Bear Prize in Berlin Film Festival, and that is not a surprise at all, after you see this movie.

The film’s story traces a girl’s strange and fascinating life in another world, where her parents are accidentally and magically transformed, and she has to survice herself and return to her own world. To do so, this pudgy-faced little girl Chihiro, now deprived of her name by a greedy witch Yu-baba, has to work at the baths where gods and sprites all over Japan come to take a rest. Chihiro’s life is full of wonderful (and often hard, even terrifying) things, and through her experiences she learns how to live, gaining the true will and power, changing from a sulky girl languidly lying on the backseat of a car, into a lively and truely courageous girl.

That’s all you have to know: you don’t need to see its trailer (English version trailer is a bit misleading), and just watch this masterpiece. Though there is a character called “Kao-nashi” (meaning “Faceless”), who out of loneliness does something harmful to the place; and there is an episode about a very stinking monster who turns out something very different, there are no villains, no heroes, and no so-called actions. And another strength of the film comes from its designs of the baths. It is based on a mosaic of Japanese and Western traditions (the witch’s office looks obviously Western while Chihiro and other female workers room is inspired from the texitle factory girls’ residence 100 years ago) Incredibly, some part are even from Chinese style.

The story, some say probably rightly, goes slower in the latter half (of the film that runs more than 2 hours), but “Spirited Away” never lets you down. It’s time for any American audience to know Miyazaki’s name, and that animation films are not meant for only kids, but for adults.

[The following might hopefully help understand some part of the film. No spoilers contained, but you might read them after watching them. Al the names referred to are from Japanese original print.]

[1] The name “Chihiro” is, when written in Chinese letters, divided into two parts: “Chi-hiro.” The first part “Chi” has another way of pronounciation, “Sen,” which becomes her temporary name.

[2] Chihiro’s real name is “Chihiro Ogino” which is briefly seen on the contract paper she signs.

[3] The handsome boy who offers a help to Chihio is called “Haku” which means in Japanese, “white.”

[4] Haku’s real name is “Migihayami Kohakusui.” All the Japanese audience, as Chihiro in fact was, would be surprised to hear this long and old-fashioned name, which clearly suggests his ancient and aristocratic origin. (CORRECTION added on 1/1/2007) I came upon recently Sonomi’s review pointing out the mistake I made here; Haku’s name is really “Nigihayami Kohakunushi.” I apologize for the mistake.

[5] The witch’s spoiled baby is called “Bou” (and his name is written prominently in a Chinese letter on his clothes). This is shrewd naming because the word “bou-ya” (which is used to call, affectinately, to baby boys) implies too much fondness to the babies on mother’s side.

[6] Chihiro’s father, at the diapidated red gate, talks knowingly about the posibility of a disused theme park. It is true that Japan saw economic depression after the boom of the 80s, and his remarks, though half telling of his too much confidence, have some ring of truth.

[7] For Miyazaki’s fans, there are some extra fun: see, for example, the re-appearance of “Susuwatari”s, tiny black speck-like creatures that carry coal in a boiler room. As fans know, they are also seen in Miyazaki’s delightful film “My Neighbor Totoro.” And check out one of the “guests” at the spa who looks and moves exactly like Totoro.

[8] And those harmless “Susuwatri”s eat Japanese traditional, very sweet confectionary called “Konpeitou” made from sugar. This is the part Japanese viewers smile because of the unexpected combination.

[9] In the same boiler room, the spider-like veteran master gives Chihiro “Kaisuu-ken,” coupon-style tickets for train. This is also the part we would smile because we all somehow share the same experience of giving them to children who go somewhere by train or bus, or of finding very old ones somewhere in the desk.

[10] That same kind master, seeing Chihiro step on the crawling worm, makes a gesture of a knife with his hand, and touches Chihiro’s hands in a unique way. This is a (now out-of-fashion) custom when touching something very dirty, symbolizing the total safety from the object in case, often accompanied with Japanese word “Engacho” (no more connection). This part is also funny to us.

[11] In the opening scene. behind the back of Chihiro, you can see the glimpse of half-hidden, red-colored package of chocolate bar, which looks like one famous brand. Probably, this is a small token of thanks for the company (famous for coffee, too), which joined in the tie-in campagin for the film’s promotion in Japan.

[12] Finally, director Miyazaki says that the film is originally made for unnamed 10-year-old girls he and the movieproducer are both acquainted with, and hope that those girls are delighted to see the film. No doubt they are.

Spirited Away is yet another masterpiece from Japan’s undisputed master of animation. Although I did not enjoy it as much as Princess Mononoke, I was more entertained by this film than by any Disney movie made in the past five years. Speaking of Disney, I thought I would clear up a few misconceptions that some people have concerning this film. Firstly, for those people who complain that Miyazaki’s films (as well as other anime) are for adults, and not children, I should point out that Miyazaki has explicitly stated that Spirited was made for young girls. (in other words, Chihiro’s age) This doesn’t mean that the film can only be enjoyed by pre-pubescant girls (I myself am a 22 year old male); it just means that you should not go into this film expecting something geared towards adults, the way Mononoke was.
Now I have noticed several people on this site comparing Spirited to Disney. Everyone seems to agree that it is nothing like Disney, because it is scary. Some parents even go so far to say that Spirited is inappropriate for children. Let me just say that you are all both right and wrong on this issue. Spirited Away is nothing like Disney as it is NOW. However, if you look at classics like Snow White, and especially Pinocchio, you’ll see that these films have much more in common with Spirited Away than with, say, Hercules, or Tarzan. As far as I’m concerned, anyone who claims that Spirited is too scary for children ought to remember what Disney used to be like. In Snow White, the wicked Queen ordered the huntsman to cut out Snow White’s heart. Even more telling, in Pinocchio, the main character ends up on an island for wicked children, who are mercilessly transformed into beasts and sold into slavery. Can you honestly say that this is somehow more wholesome or less nightmarish than what goes on in Spirited? Anyone who remembers these films recognizes that Spirited Away’s often nightmarish sense of morality and justice (parents being turned into pigs for their greed) is not novel to the American imagination, but something old, something many of us have clearly forgotten, even though we saw these very films as children! This harkens back to a time when Americans had a much clearer sense of morality, a much greater willingness to recognize an absolute line between right and wrong. For me, this is refreshing, for you it may not be. As for your children being scared, I agree it is a possibility. I was scared when I saw Snow White and Pinocchio, yet I enjoyed those two films immensely. Moreover, they are both considered to be undisputed classics of American animation. So to all those parents who think they can comfortably dismiss Spirited Away as some alien abomination, you had better look closer to home, because it may not be quite as alien as you thought.

I need to preface that I am not a fan of anime (or at least I didn’t used to be). I picked up #1 in this series at a discount store for my husband. We watched it together and both wanted more! I found the rest of the series on amazon.com and have purchased all but one. The Galaxy Railways, Vol. 4: Leaps of Faith is really, really good. This is not your typical Saturday morning cartoon. The stories have depth and the characters show real development throughout the different volumes. The only down side is there are only 4 episodes on each disk. Nevertheless, I believe they are worth the price. I hope you think so too.

I admit it…I love this movie…I saw this at my local shop (dvd planet) and couldn’t resist… Directors Cut..6 more minutes! I got a sick feelingn when I put it in my player and the SAME menu as the previous edition came up… Turns out to be the same as previously released with a new cover. If you have the previous release…do NOT buy this.

lets hope a Blu Ray edition with some real bonus features will happen eventually. My 1 star rating is for this hopeless retread in packaging NOT the excellent movie!

I’ve been a long time Highlander fan, but with past DVDs I’ve always been disappointed with both the audio and video, got a PS3 and the audio problems went away, but the somewhat lackluster video was still present. The Immortal Edition DVD I had just seemed a little noisy or grainy to get any visual pleasure, even by Standard Definition means.

Then the 2009 Lionsgate came, whether this edition was remastered I’m not sure, though it does look more visually appealing to me, though I was a bit worried with the same Menu screen from my previous DVD. The image is not as good as Lionsgate’s 2004 Highlander 2 DVD, but I’d recommend this one non the less. I so hope for all the Highlander movies to come to Blu-Ray and look and sound great.

This DVD double feature of Clara Bow at the beginning and during the thick of her career gives us a fascinating glimpse of one of the most popular silent stars. DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS (1922) was shot when Clara was only 16 by D.W. Griffith protege’ Elmer Clifton. Her part is only a supporting one but you can clearly see the star potential there. The main focus of this film is not the romance between the two leads but rather the detailed scenes of New Bedford whalers plying their trade. This makes the film a fascinating historical document which is not for the squeamish as it contains actual and graphic footage of the killing and dismembering of whales. What you see is MOBY DICK for real. This print taken from the Killiam Collection is in good shape although it seems a little fast at times. It is much better than the old VHS version put out by Critic”s Choice some years back.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Parisian Love / Down to the Sea in Ships! Click Here

PARISIAN LOVE (1925) was made only 3 years later but what a difference in Clara’s appearance. Here she is the star and fully displays the vivacious charm and charisma that made her so popular. The story of French Apache lovers and their benefactor is a little hard to follow probably due to some missing footage and features some rather curious interplay between the male leads. The sets of Parisian garrets are marvelous and Lillian Leighton steals the show as a Marie Dressler like matriarch at a swanky party. This DVD copy was taken from the only surviving print which was discovered in 1998 and restored by the UCLA Film and Televison Archive. All in all an interesting combination of 1920’s style romance with rugged documentary style footage and the chance to see Clara Bow develop from a Mary Pickford like tomboy into a full fledged star. Yet another fine job from Kino International in their ongoing series of silent film presentations on DVD.

Viewers who seek out this Clara Bow double feature will likely compare it to IT, the 1927 charmer to which all of her films are compared sooner or later, the film that finally captured the most naturally exuberant (and unnaturally wounded) personality in silent film. Bow had made more than 30 films in the five years preceding IT, only a handful of which survive in any condition. Even her minor films, therefore, are impossible to ignore. DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS shows us Bow in 1922, barely 17 years old and fresh as rain. In her small role as a long-haired tomboy, she neither poses nor emotes; she is simply herself at 17. The part offers few hints of the luscious flapper whose unembarrassed sensuality would one day startle even Elinor Glyn and deluge Paramount with nearly fifty thousand fan letters a month. PARISIAN LOVE, released three years after DOWN TO THE SEA, teases us with glimpses of the It Girl-to-be. But they are tantalizing glimpses: the long tresses are gone, replaced by a pushed-up, snip-sprung, crazy-tilt hairdo that eases our entry into the softest, most haunted eyes that ever looked out of a movie screen. The silly plot is forgettable; Bow is not. PARISIAN LOVE should serve as the springboard to a much better Bow film from 1925, THE PLASTIC AGE (available from Image in a twofer with THE SHOW OFF). One day, perhaps, the incomparable WINGS (1927) will get a domestic release. Isn’t it strange that the first movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture is not available on a commercial U.S. Region 1 DVD?

“V for Vendetta” is going to confuse a lot of people. Nevertheless, and make no mistake about it, this is movie making of the highest order, combining all the finest elements of great storytelling into a potent roller coaster of a movie filled with great action, intellect and above all, ideas. Its message can - and will - easily be dismissed by naysayers as sophomoric or too “out there,” or “anti-american” but there is also an earnestness here that will resonate strongly, and perhaps, frighteningly, to many viewers who will not fail to see the correlation between this fictional tale and the way the world we live in works.

Buy,Download, Or Stream V for Vendetta! Click Here

Filled with stereotypes and archetypes, “V” is unapologetic in its essaying of morality and in its strongly held sentiment that this tale is “for the people, by the people.” Brothers and writers Larry and Andy Wachowski (of Matrix fame) have infused their screenplay with the anger, confusion and hope captured in Alan Moore’s original graphic novel - and it’s better looking as a result.

I truly believe that many who see “V” will be upset by it, but hopefully more of us will be inspired by its bold, blatant message and take a good hard look at ourselves and the way the world works around us and see that, with sacrifice and thoughtfulness, the world can be changed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream V for Vendetta! Click Here

As Evey, Natalie Portman is cast in something of the “victim” role, but she makes us route for her, and to her credit she goes beyond that making the transformation of her character not only believable, but in the end, noble.

Hugo Weaving - the man behind the mask - gives a performance that can only be described as mesmerizing. As “V” he exposes all of the strength and weakness of a character that is equal parts savior and villain.

The physical production is beautiful in its realism as it paints a nightmarish world of the not-very-distant future (2020) and is chilling in its depiction of governmental power, socio-political corruption and, ultimately, the complacency of its citizens. Weaving’s “V” challenges, and ultimately changes all of that, as he quickly unravels the fabric of civilized society, capturing the public with his bold ideas - and with the promise and permanancy of change through rebellion and political uprising.

Most chillingly, the film invokes the dread once feared in “1984″ but with a renewed vigor that drives home the horrors Orwell foresaw, and still loom large in our comfy modern world. Chilling? You betcha! For those who know the novel, there is little skimping, and, given the current world situation, one must absolutely applaud the filmmakers for “going there” as far as the ending is concerned. This is film making at its emotional and challenging best.

Are there flaws? Of course there are, but ultimately “V for Vendetta” rises far above them in its presentation of a world filled with ideas that have forever been debated, and does it in a story well told, beautifully acted and full of hope for humankind. Not bad work for a movie. Actually, it’s magnificent.

Alan Moore’s decision to want his name off the final credits for the film adaptation of V for Vendetta now makes sense. Moore has had a hate/hate relationship with Hollywood and the film industry in general. They’ve taken two of his other works in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell and bollocks’d them up (to borrow a term used quite abit in V for Vendetta). Outside of Watchmen, Alan Moore sees V for Vendetta as one of his more personal works and after reading the screenplay adaptation of the graphic novel by The Wachowski Brothers his decision afterwards was to demand his name be removed from the film if it was ever made. Part of this was his hatred of the film industry for their past mistakes and another being his wish for a perfect adaptation or none at all. Well, V for Vendetta by James McTeigue and The Wachowski Brothers is not a perfect film adaptation. What it turns out to be is a film that stays true to the spirit of Moore’s graphic novel and given a modern, up-to-the-current news retelling of the world’s state of affairs.

V for Vendetta starts off with abit of a prologue to explain the relevance of the Guy Fawkes mask worn by V throughout the film and the significance of the date of the 5th of November. I think this change in the story from the source material may be for the benefit of audiences who didn’t grow up in the UK and have no idea of who Guy Fawkes was and what his Gunpowder Plot was all about. The sequence is short but informative. From then on we move on to the start of the main story and here the film adheres close enough to the source material with a few changes to the Evey character (played with skill that more than makes up for her Amidala performances) but not enough to ruin the character. Caught after curfew and accosted by the ruling government’s secret police called Fingermen, Evey soon encounters V who saves her not just from imprisonment but rape.

Right from the start the one thing McTeigue and The Wachowski Brothers got dead-on was casting Hugo Weaving as the title character. Voice silky, velvety and sonorous, Weaving infuses V with an otherworldly, theatrical personality. Whether V was speaking phrases from Shakespeare, philosophers or pop culture icons, the voice gave a character who doesn’t show his face from behind the enternally-smiling Guy Fawkes mask real life. I’d forgiven the makers of this films for some of the changes they made to the story and some of the characters for keeping V as close to how Moore wrote him. Once V and Evey are thrown in together by the happenstance of that nightly encounter their fates became intertwined. Portman plays the reluctant witness to V’s acts of terrorism, murders and destruction in the beginning, but a poignant and emotionally powerful sequence to start the second half of the film soon brings Evey’s character not much towards V’s way of doing things, but to understanding just why he’s doing them. This sequence became the emotional punch of the whole film and is literally lifted word for word from the graphic novel. I heard more than just a few people sobbing in the theater as the scenes and story unfolded.

The rest of the cast seemed like a who’s who of the British acting community. From Stephen Rea’s stubborn and dogged Chief Inspector Finch whose quest to find V leads him to finding clues about his government’s past actions that he’d rather have not found. Then there’s Stephen Fry’s flamboyant TV show host who becomes Evey’s only other ally whose secret longings have been forbidden by the government, but who’s awakened by V’s actions to go through with his own form of rebellion. Then there’s John Hurt as High Chancellor Adam Sutler who’s seen chewing up the scenery with his Hitler-like performance through Big Brother video conferences (an ironic bit of casting since John Hurt also played Winston Smith in the film adaptation of the Orwell classic 1984). I really couldn’t find any of the supporting players as having done a bad job in their performances. Even Hurt’s Sutler may seemed over-the-top to some but his performance just showed how much of a hatemonger Sutler and in the end his Norsefire party really were in order to stay in power.

The story itself, as I mentioned earlier, had had some changes made to it. Some of these changes angered Moore and probably anger his more die-hard fans. I count myself as one of these die-hards, but I know how film adaptations of classic literary works must and need to trim some of the fat from the main body and theme of the story to fully translate onto the silver screen. The Wachowski Brother’s screenplay did just that. They trimmed some of the side stories and tertiary characters from the story and concentrated on V, Evey and Inspector Finch’s pursuit of both and the truth. This adaptation is much closer to how Peter Jackson adapted The Lord of the Rings. As a fan of Moore I understood why he was unhappy with the changes. But then Moore is also an avowed perfectionist and only a perfect adaptation would do.

Already critics on both sides of the aisle have called V for Vendetta revolutionary, subversive, daring to irresponsible, propagandist. All because the film dares to ask serious questions about the nature and role of violence as a form of dissent. But the granddaddy question the film brings up that has people talking is the question: terrorist or freedom fighter? Is V one or the other or is he both? Make no mistake about it, V for all intents and purposes is a terrorist if one was to use the definition of what a terrorist is. The makers of this film goes to great lenghts to describe throughout the film just how Sutler and his Norsefire (with its iconic Nazi-like symbols and fundamentaist Christian thinking) party rose to power in the UK. Partly due to what seemed like the failed US foreign policy and its subsequent and destructive decline as a superpower and the worldwide panic and fear it began as a result. V for Vendetta also ask just who was to blame for allowing such individuals to rule over them. V has his reasons for killing these powers-that-be, but he also points out that people really should just look in the mirror if they need to know who really was to blame. For it was the population — whose desire to remain safe and have a semblance of peace — gave up more and more of their basic liberties and rights for a return to order. If one was to look at the past 100 years they would see that it’s happened before. There was the regime of Pol Pot in Cambodia, Milosevic’s Greater Serbia, and the king of the hill of them all being Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Inner Circle.

Another thing about V for Vendetta that will surely talked about alot will be the images used in the film. Not just images and symbols looking so much like Nazi icons, but images from the current events sweeping the globe that has been shown time and time again in the news and written about in magazines and newspapers. The film shows people bound and hooded like prisoners from Abu Ghraib. The reason of the war on terror used time and time again by Sutler to justify why England and its people need him and his group to protect them by any means necessary. V for Vendetta seems like a timely film for our current times. Even with the conclusion of the film finally accomplishing what Guy Fawkes failed to do that night of November 5th some 400 plus years ago, V for Vendetta doesn’t give all the answers to all the questions it raises. For some I’m sure this would be something that’ll frustrate them. So much of people who go to watch thought-provoking films want their questions answered as clearly as possible and all of them. V for Vendetta doesn’t answer them but gives the audience enough information to try and work it out themselves.

In final analysis, V for Vendetta accomplishes in bringing the main themes of Alan Moore’s graphic novel to life and even does it well despite some of the changes made. It is a film that is sure to polarize the extreme left and right of the political pundits and commentators. But as a piece of thought-provoking and even as a politically subversive film, V for Vendetta does it job well. It is not a perfect film by any respect, but the story and message it tries to convey in addition to its value as a piece of entertainment mor than makes up for its flaws. V for Vendetta more than continues the current crop of seriously done comic book fillm adaptations (Batman Begins, X2, Sin City, and A History of Violence) but it also shows that Alan Moore’s work can be adapted well to the screen when given to the right people. It may not be perfect and it may not make Alan Moore happy, but it comes close and more than makes up for LXG and From Hell.

I read Mr. Maltin’s brief review and was astonished that somebody who is in the business of reviewing films could so easily write this movie off. This film is hilarious; it has an innocence that we don’t see much anymore. Don Knotts was a comedic genius, I’d without hesitation put him on a par with Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, Jim Carey. He plays the nerdly goofball brilliantly, and we can all see a bit of ourselves in his various awkward moments. This movie skillfully mocks the Cold War tension with it’s parody of the Space Race, and there’s even a little romance as Don lusts for a beauty who barely acknowledges his existence until she hears that he’s going to be an astronaut. The soundtrack is great as well, very happy stuff and it reminds me of the old Sunday night Disney show’s music.

My wife and I watched this on Septemeber 15, 2001, four days after September 11, 2001. It was exactly the ticket for helping us to forget for a moment the ugliness of the real world.

I’ve never been very impressed by Mr. Maltin. He gives terse conclusions which are unsubstantiated by specific references. I’m 41 years old and this movie entertained me like few others. Don Knotts is an undervalued classic; my bet is that after he passes away there will be a big revival for his work.

Once again Leonard Maltin is wrong, wrong, wrong (see above). You either like Don Knotts or you don’t. For those who do, and there are millions of us, his comedies from the 1960s like “The Reluctant Astronaut” are very entertaining, and, yes, very funny films.

I grew up in the 1960s and “The Reluctant Astronaut” was another of those Don Knott’s comedies that the whole family was taken to the drive-in theatre on a Friday night. For Leonard Maltin to call this childish is an unfair statement. I’m almost forty now and I still LOVE watching this movie as every bit as I did back in ‘67. I would never pay a dime to see Leonard Maltin act and I always turn the channel whenever he comes on television with one of his one sided reviews.

What is funnier than seeing Knott’s up in space opening a special can that shoots out peanut butter and then proceeds to do a dance around him like a snake? I am on the floor rolling! And who would ever think that Leslie Nielsen would ever become the icon for 90s comedies that he has today? He is very straight in this film which gives the film balance.

They don’t movies like this anymore. I highly recomend this video. Buy it now before it goes out of print.

The visuals are nothing short of stunning, especially in HD. It’s worth the download just to check out how beautifully the cg animation is rendered. The action scenes are tight, with Matrix-esque slow motion shots, crazy camera angles and an emphasis on heavy gun play, indicative of producer John Woo’s style. One drawback on the cg animation though is that when characters interact with each other physically it seems awkward. They don’t feel like they are touching. I imagine that when you make something with animation like that you’d run into clipping issues when the characters intereact heavily. In fact, it reminded me of cut scenes from Eternal Sonata, a video game using similar animation techniques but on a bigger scale obviously.

The story is an upgrade from the first movie, although the main antagonist borrows heavily from classic Star Trek villain, the Borg. There’s even a Borg like cube of sorts that serves as it’s foundation. The subplot consists of a triangle between Deunan, Briareos (the main protagonists from the first movie) and Tereus, a biroid created mostly from Briareos’s DNA who becomes Deunan’s new partner after her lover falls in battle.

If I were to make a criticism I’d say that the main antagonist was revealed a tad too late, making the final resolution a little anti-climactic. At a runtime of about an hour and 40 minutes I felt like another 20 minutes would have been justified. When it was over, I couldn’t quite believe it at first. Also, and this may be a good thing, events from the first movie go almost completely without mention. This means that you won’t have to have seen the first one to appreciate this, but at the same time there is a lack of continuity for those that did.

All in all though, it’s a good film and worth a watch.

The first Appleseed film (from 2004) was quite a treat. The cell-shaded CG graphics looked very good for the time. Complementing this obvious standout aspect was an intriguing story and an excellent soundtrack. It’s worth noting that the story, in particular, felt like a genuinely original re-animation of sci-fi concepts.

Fast forward to today and we have the sequel, Ex Machina. It’s pretty simple to separate what works and doesn’t in Machina:

GRAPHICS:

The level of detail in the graphics has improved dramatically, and characters look less like geometric objects with textures painted on and more like genuine people. The cityscapes are even more impressive. Furthermore, the action is more frequent and looks even slicker.

My two gripes with the visuals are these: First, in what is all too common in action movies like this, the best scene is the first one. Hands down. I don’t understand why so many directors feel the need to frontload their movies. I will say that the movie is less guilty of this than its predecessor. Second, movement outside of action scenes still looks a bit jerky. Some might fault mo-cap technology, but for my money, Final Fantasy: Advent Children boasted some mighty believable movement.

STORY/WRITING:

Here’s where Ex Machina falls apart. The story here isn’t anything you haven’t seen executed better in anime/other entertainment. Compared to the plot of the first movie- which created a unique sci-fi framework, this one felt like a filler episode. The villain was cliche, the story far less complex/meaningful than the first, and any intrigue or mystery the story might yet have held was ruined by the horrible writing. The film tasks itself with letting the viewer in on a number of concepts necessary to the plot, but rather than integrate them seamlessly into the dialog, it bashes the viewer over the head with them.

MUSIC:

The soundtrack wasn’t bad- I just didn’t notice it most of the time. This constitutes a slight letdown considering how often I return to the soundtrack from the first movie.

OVERALL: Ex Machina is a sight to behold and warrants a blu-ray purchase. Just don’t expect it to expand much on the ideas introduced in the first Appleseed.

The fourth chapter of the anime at the very top of my current “drooling in anticipation of every release” title is finally here and it delivers. After some truly obnoxious and distracting humor took the black sails out the last volume, I’m happy to say that that this one is relatively goof-free, though not perfect. If you’ve ever thought that the characters of Hellsing are not the strong point, you are about to be schooled. While there is no shortage of gore and murderously exciting (though brief) action scenes, this chapter chooses to expand the story, raise the tension, and introduce a cavalcade of new warriors into the ring. The villains get their due this time around. In fact, the last ten minutes is nearly entirely devoted to a spectacularly mad speech given by the Millennium organization’s leader, The Major; a man Alucard put down half a century ago during WWII. Millennium’s goal is chaos. Bringing the world to it’s knees starting with Britain by realizing the Third Reich’s plan of a vampire army. “Hellsing Ultimate: Volume 4″ gives us the declaration of war, and it’s opening skirmish with Great Britain’s defenders from the supernatural, the Hellsing organization.

The film opens with Alucard phoning Integra. Not to say hi, mind you, but to continue his taunting of his master about the human bloodbath she ordered in Volume 3. But it turns out that there is one human that the No Life King respects: the Queen herself, who he meets not for the first time at a roundtable conference including the Vatican’s hated Iscariot organization. Yes, Father Anderson is in this installment as well. Never a bad thing. The meeting is interrupted by a messenger from Millennium. Now if there is one thing I have never, ever thought it is “Hellsing needs more catgirls”. Sure this particular catgirl is a boy, but seeing that the character model is essentially Seres Victoria with cat ears, I’m calling it what it is. Alucard’s reaction to said catgirl: blowing it’s fu#*ing head off. Have I mentioned that that vampire is my favorite animated character of all time by about a mile? The Major describes him best: “immortal, invincible, undefeated , and almighty”. He forgot “wicked cool and pure evil”, but he is plotting to kill the guy so you expect him to omit a few praises. In Volume 4, the head vamp adds kamikaze pilot and possessor of God-like evil power to his resume. That’s a good day for most any creature of the night.

My favorite thing about Volume 4 is the character on the cover. A nazi vampire girl who calls herself Rip Van Winkle, possessing a joyous personality and a love of singing triumphant old-time war songs. Her weapon of choice is an old-school single-shot musket. Why use a single-shot weapon? One is all she needs to destroy an army. She can guide the bullet’s flight to take out as many targets as she wishes or hit the same target repeatedly, shredding even fighter jets to bits. But there is one thing she can’t do; and that thing is keep her composure in the presence of the baddest vamp on the planet. Pity. I really loved that character and wished for better from her. But hey, we can plainly see that The Major has an entire freak show of brilliant-looking characters at his back so I expect future volumes to be insanely action-packed. Also of note is an Integra/Seres scene that seems to have come from a fanboy doujinshi. Not complaining, just observing.

As cool as this is, the pacing at the end is quite atrocious for such a short film. While this is the longest Hellsing OVA yet at around 55 minutes, when the last 15 or so consist of only a villain’s speech and a slow supernatural torture scene that borders on rape than you imagine much more could have been done. This is pretty much a symptom of the main complaint which is pretty much the same complaint I would level at every volume of “Hellsing Ultimate”. IT’S TOO DAMN SHORT! The wait for these is torture for me and the short length of each story keeps me perpetually frustrated that each DVD ends right when it’s reaching critical mass. It keeps me lusting for more of my favorite ongoing anime, but it annoys me as well.

Well that’s the skinny on “Hellsing Ultimate: Volume 4″. It fails to reach the heights of the amazing Volume 2, but it isn’t far off either. As far as the animated vampire-kills-nazis action/horror genre goes it won’t get much better than this. If you haven’t seen any of the Ultimate series than you have done yourself a disservice. These OVA’s mostly kick the snot out the television series. If you don’t wish to experience the same story as the original anime, start with Volume 3 where the action deviates from the established anime story and enjoy what is a far superior continuation of the first half of the television show’s story, which got a little stale after the halfway point. Here’s to a quick release for Volume 5!

4 1/2 stars, rounded down for an underperforming cover character. (sniff)

The Good Things

*Excellent video/sound quality.

*This version of “Hellsing” has excellent imagery and graphics. It includes a lot of computer-generated-imagery, but none of it looks too hoaky or out-of-place. It is definately high quality animation.

*Excellent amount of bloody action. Some of the scenes in this volume are downright awesome. Also includes a few comical moments.

*Storyline is great. It is close to the original manga. It has also accelerated in momentum, thrusting the whole Millennium Group story arc into the saga in a way that is very revealing and cohesive.

*Characters are splendid. All of the main characters are still great. The characters of the Millennium group are now introduced, and are a very interesting group to watch. The main enemy in this one (Rip Van Wrinkle) is fun to watch (although she doesn’t put up much of a fight against Alucard).

*Some good lines throughout.

*Funky music (although I think the music in the old “Hellsing” show was better).

The Bad Things

*Not for the sqeamish; contains lots of bloody violence and swearing (rated TV-MA).

*A lot of stuff is packed into a single hour. As fast and condensed as everything is, it may be seen as overly compressed with not enough exposition.

The Other Things

*If you buy the single-disc version, you get little or no special features. The two-disc steelbook edition (although more expensive) includes a small wealth of interviews, textless credit scenes, a karaoke version of the major’s speech (which was pretty darn long), and probably some other stuff.

This volume is probably one of the best in the series so far. The action scenes are incredible, and the whole episode is fun to watch (except maybe the end, with the major’s super-long monologue). Above all, they finally introduce a cast of interesting characters that had never been seen before (except in the manga), and they are great to watch. It is clear now that “Hellsing Ultimate” is not just another serious vampire shooting spree; it’s a whole lot of fun. A definate must-buy for those already into the series.

I would have never heard about Timecrimes if not for seeing it’s trailer on the Let the Right One In DVD (another foreign film worth your time). Both are going to be remade here in the US, but I doubt they will come close to the originals. This is hands down one of the best time travel movies I have ever seen. You can tell that the budget wasn’t much and the film only has a total of four cast members, but with good writing and acting you don’t need million dollar SFX shots. There were many moments that caught me by surprise and the farther along the movie goes the more it draws you in. I’m not sure I got everything figured out after watching it the first time, but that’s what makes these kind of films so great. You can tell the writer and director, Nacho Vigalondo, put a lot of time and effort in crafting such a masterful work of Sci-Fi/Suspense. Make sure you watch this film with subtitles and not dubbed because it makes a huge difference in tone. Take it from me, this is a must see. Add it to your rental queue and prepare to have 90 minutes of thought and wonder.

A huge heads up, for those who are considering purchasing the video via on demand. This is the dubbed into English version…not subtitled. I stopped the movie after five minutes in. Hugely disappointed by the non-disclosure.

This film is truly unique in the film-making world, it is the only film that i have ever seen or dealt with that advances the plot and tells important parts of the story in TWO languages. I have a copy of this film that is from Germany with no subtitles. Since i speak both german and russian and am familiar with this point in history, i am very impressed with the realistic portrayal of the last days of WW2. Young Gregor Hecker, who is technically a german, but has grown up a russian and deals with trying to find out what it actually means to be “german”, but the situations he faces and his experiences really can translate to just about anyone trying to find out what it means to be “american” or “russian” or “french” or anyone’s nationality. He learns some very interesting lessons about himself and also about dealing with other individual people, and that one should never have any pre-concieved notions about groups of people. The most fascinating thing about this movie, is that it is a telling story of individuality and humanity, while the larger story of war is all around. I recommend this film to anyone (since it has subtitles) interested in WW2, because it will give a very accurate and interesting perspective of this time period.

I have watched this film on DVD several times and plan to watch it again.

This would be a good film for anyone who is studying Russian or German.

There is a very complex interplay between Hecker, who is a German-Russian, Wadim who is a Russian Jew, and Sascha, who is Russian. Hecker is only nineteen and does not know much about the world. He was raised in Germany until he was 8 then his family moved to Moscow. So, his formative years were spend in Russia and he identifies himself as a Soviet. This leads to some interesting scenes in which he interacts with Germans who, in some cases, even know his family members. They are in turn fascinated by a “German” in a Soviet uniform who is appearing as a their conqueror.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I Was Nineteen! Click Here

His comrade Wadim is a Russian Jew who is also a German language teacher in his civilian profession. Wadim loves the German language, but must reconcile the defeat of Germany, the atrocities of the camps, and his friend Hecker’s disinterest in German culture. At one point there is strife between Wadim and Hecker over this.

Sascha is a kommisar and takes care of young Hecker. He is like an older brother to Hecker. His character is uncomplicated by the internal conflicts of the others. Along with Dsingis, they provide a solid foundation for the conflicted Hecker and Wadim.

One of the most powerful scenes in the movie is at then end when Hecker and his captured German prisoners come under fire from a passing German convoy. A German prisoner, Willi Lommer, who had been disarmed, picks up a rifle to help Hecker defend their position. It’s a pure “us against them” moment in which countries, uniforms, backgrounds, don’t matter, only survival.

A complex and interesting movie worth not only watching, but studying.
